Alice was born in Turo, England to halfblood parents. Her childhood was a normal one- she grew up in a loving environment and had a black cat, Dinah, who she treated as more of a little sister than an animal. During her youth, she met with Charles Dodgson and later inspired him to write the books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The royalties from the books helped Alice's parents afford their home and handle bills, though they had a falling out with Dodgson when Alice's Hogwarts letter arrived on her 11th birthday. Dodgson had convinced himself that Alice, like himself, was a squib, and when it was proven she wasn't, he became upset for reasons he never really elaborated on in front of her. When Alice would bring it up, her parents would shush her and send her off to play chess; which she grew to enjoy.
Unfortunately, tragedy decided to throw a rather large wrench in the gears before Alice was due to leave for Hogwarts. One night while she was asleep, Dinah knocked over the kerosene lamp on her desk. The fire spread rapidly, nearly killing Alice and claming the lives of her parents. Alice survived only because she'd dove from one of the second story windows and landed in the snow; though she came away from the experience with several broken bones, and a broken mind to go along with it. Her once happy outlook on life soured into a scornful and remorse-filled view, her humor took a sharp edge for the dark, and she took a fondness to the poem Jabberwocky, even going so far as to call one of the knives Dodgson kept with him "The vorpal blade". Her grasp on sanity, to say the least, was in question.
Her bones were repaired and paperwork was put into effect to send the girl to Rutledge's Asylum, when Dodgson interceeded. He admitted her to a short-term hospital and doctors discovered she suffered from a severe form of Survivor's Guilt on top of a near catatonic state. She was given one kind of medication to keep her lucid and another kind to supress the sometimes overwhelming suicidial thoughts at bay and a few months later, she headed to Hogwarts.
